Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
is the recognition that an organization is inextricably intertwined with society and the earth, and must take responsibility for its actions in regards to the “triple bottom line” of people, planet, and profit. Below are just a few ways that the Addiction Studies Institute and our partners are making a difference.

Energy Reduction

  • The Greater Columbus Convention Center (GCCC) is currently a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) registered program. LEED seeks to minimize the impact that buildings have on the environment.
  • The GCCC is implementing a single stream recycling process which allows all recycled materials to be put into the same containers.
  • The GCCC has replaced all lights in exhibit halls, ballrooms and parking garages with Neptun induction lamps which use far less energy, contain no mercury and last up to 10 years. Ballroom electricity savings are over 50%.
  • The GCCC has an integrated HVAC system that allows them to monitor the entire building from one room. The system prevents the GCCC from heating and cooling areas that are not occupied.

Minimize Waste

  • Water coolers will be placed throughout the convention center eliminating the extra waste of using individual single serve water bottles.
  • No styrofoam will be used for food/beverage functions.
  • Juice, ice tea, and coffee will be served in pitchers or large containers rather than in individual containers.
  • China service will be used rather than paper or plastic service ware for the continental breakfast.
  • All speaker proposals are sent electronically thus reducing paper and mailing envelopes as well as postal service fuel and energy to deliver.
  • Handouts are received electronically by the conference manager/printer saving paper and transport energy.
  • The Institute registration brochure will be posted electronically thus reducing the number of copies that needed to be mailed.
  • The Institute utilizes hotels within walking distance of the GCCC thus reducing fuel usage and emissions.
  • Directional signage will be reused thus reducing waste.
  • Plastic name badge holders will be collected at the end of the Institute and recycled.
  • The GCCC features motion-sensitive water-saving faucets in their restrooms.
  • The Institute exhibitor prospectus was sent electronically and the service kit is available online only, significantly reducing paper waste.
  • Carpet cleaning machines at the GCCC utilize Green Seal certified products.

Environmentally Responsible Purchasing

  • The GCCC uses Green Seal cleaning products which clean the dirt away but are less toxic to the environment and put less stress on the water systems they enter. They do not pick-up heavy metals, contain no VOC’s (acid rain producing Volatile Organic Compounds) and have less impact on indoor air quality.
